Henry C. Ulen

Henry C. Ulen played a pivotal role in shaping the community that bears his name. Inspired by his love for recreation, fellowship, and thoughtful community planning, Ulen developed the golf course and the Town of Ulen in the early 20th century as a model residential area centered around leisure and quality of life. With its beautifully crafted golf course and inviting clubhouse, the club quickly became a cherished gathering place for residents and guests. Henry C. Ulen’s forward-thinking approach and commitment to excellence laid the foundation for a legacy that continues to define the charm, character, and camaraderie of Ulen Country Club today.

1922

Where It All Began

A golf club in Lebanon started with The Fortnightly Club, which met on March 20th, to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The men discussed where to play golf in the next week and later considered forming their own club due to other courses being too far. “If you fellows will find some land closer to Lebanon,” Mr. Ulen said, “I’ll build you a $50,000 club house.” With such an offer on the table, the group wasted no time in finding a new site, but as it turned out, the cost of the clubhouse soared to $100,000. An expense that Henry Ulen always believed was worth every penny.

1923

Land Purchased

On January 11th land was purchased just north of town. February 22 William Diddel is engaged to design a 9-hole course. Later on, the first annual meeting of stocker-holders is held at the Boone County Courthouse.
