The Golf Course

A Brief History of the Ulen CC Golf Course

Ulen Country Club is an 18 hole private facility, originally conceived in 1924.  Mr. William H. “Bill” Diddel of Indianapolis was hired as the course architect on February 22, 1923 and was responsible for the original layout, which remains mainly intact today.

Ulen CC is proud of its “claim to fame” as the first Bill Diddel designed facility as Mr. Diddel went on to design other well known area courses such as Meridian Hills, Highland and Hillcrest golf courses in Indianpolis as well as dozens of golf courses around Indiana.

Ulen Country Club has a friendly layout, suitable for players of all abilities and interests. The course can play up to 6310 yards and has a par of 70 from all tees. A well laid out facility for walkers, Ulen CC was originally designed in the days of caddy golf. The course also has golf cart paths adjacent to all tees and greens for those who prefer to ride.

The entire Ulen CC golf facility covers 110 acres and includes 2 acres of greens, 2 acres of tees, 25 acres of fairways, and 80 acres of maintained rough. There are two water features on the course.  A small lake comes into play on three holes while a creek crosses seven different holes.

The Ulen Country Club golf course offers Laser Link technology to calculate distances on every hole.

Mature trees and landscaping come into play on most every hole. The course layout is highlighted by a great quartet of particularly challenging par 3 holes. We do offer four sets of tees, allowing the golfer to set their game according to their individual ability and preference.

The course is well protected by eighty bunkers spread over a shorter layout.  These bunkers guard Ulen’s always well-manicured greens and place a premium on approach shots and the player’s short game.  Ulen’s greens are smallish, often fast and undulating, making approach shots a continued challenge.

The greenskeepers at Ulen CC continue to complement the course with extensive landscaping for aesthetic pleasure.  This landscape blends well with the course to provide a pleasing and natural golfing experience.

Ulen Country Club continues to undergo renovations to improve the overall course.  A  bunker and tee renovation project was completed in 2001, with all tees converted to bent grass, and every bunker was either updated or added new to the layout.  A totally new irrigation system was installed in the fall of 2003, including everything from the pump station to an overall control system.  Ulen CC’s latest upgrade was a total conversion of our fairways from rye grass to bent grass in the fall of 2006, making the course a 100% bent grass facility from tees to greens.

Throughout these changes, the original integrity of Bill Diddel’s course design of contoured greens, fairway mounding and an overall tight but fair golfing layout remains the same.  Ulen Country Club is the only known Diddel golf course that can boast this claim.
